Operation: Registration set out to raise awareness of the importance of organ donor registration in Canada

Sept. 8, 2015, Victoria, BC – After four months, and a close battle between three finalist videos over the last week of August, actor and retired CFL star Howard Dell is the successful winner of the David Foster Foundation’s Operation: Registration video contest, helping to promote organ donor registration among Canadians.

Operation: Registration was launched by the David Foster Foundation in response to the national need to raise the profile of organ donor awareness and registration in Canada. The David Foster Foundation and national partners WestJet and TELUS united to help recruit Canadians to create a public service announcement video (PSA) (30 – 90” in length), to be showcased at the David Foster Foundation Miracle Gala & Concert in Toronto on Sept. 26, 2015.

As the winner, Dell and a guest will be attending the Miracle Gala & Concert in Toronto, flying into Toronto with Foundation partner WestJet.

“We were excited to develop and execute a grassroots campaign across Canada that inspired people from coast to coast to submit videos for consideration,” say Michael Ravenhill, CEO of the David Foster Foundation. “We had a series of strong candidates, and our selection committee consisting of panel of judges from across the country worked to narrow the finalists to the top three. Howard Dell’s “Second Chance”, Trey Robinson “You are the Future” and Lia Michalski’s “Give the Gift.” From there, it was up to the public voting the David Foster Foundation’s Facebook page to choose what video they felt was the most impactful.”

The three videos were unveiled on the David Foster Foundation’s Facebook page, where the community was invited to vote – simply by liking their favourite video – from Aug. 22 to 31. Throughout the final round of the contest, Dell edged out second place Michalski “Gift the Gift” by less than 500 votes. Through social media statistics the challenge reached audience of over 50,000 that week.

Dell’s PSA video and the other finalists will be used by the David Foster Foundation promoting organ donor registration awareness throughout Canada. The foundation hopes these videos will help inspire the 85 per cent of Canadians who have indicated are in support of organ donation, but have not registered to date.  As a country average only 14 per cent of Canadians are actually registered.
